Managua
More than 30 years after the devastating earthquake of 1972 where more than ten thousand people lost their lives, the capital of Nicaragua has not completely recovered. The old center is still a strange mix of ruins, deserted lots and new large governmental buildings.
Difficult for the visitor to find his way in a city where most of the streets have no names and no numbers. People will use landmarks as gas stations, restaurants,... To complicate things people often refer to landmarks that no longer exist (see the yellow car and former chineese restaurant story) and use up and down not in a topographical sense but for east and west because it's where the sun goes up and goes down !
To find your way look for the black silhouetto of Augusto César Sandino, on the top of the Tiscapa hill. Climb the hill to enjoy a panoramic view on the city and the Managua lake.
