El Castillo doit son nom à la forteresse espagnole qui domine la petite ville. Construite aux alentours de 1675 la Fortaleza de la Inmaculada Concepción avait pour but de contrôler le rio San Juan que les pirates remontaient pour atteindre le lac Nicaragua et ensuite attaquer la ville de Granada.
