Coyotepe fort, Masaya
Near the town of Masaya, the Coyotepe fort is built on the top of a hill. Now used by the Boy Scouts of Nicaragua the fort has a turbulent history.
It was the place where General Benjamín Zeledón, one of Nicaragua's national heroes, resisted the US Marines and died in 1912.
Later, during the Somoza dictatorship, it was used a jail for oponent and in 1979, in the last days of the regime, the dreaded Guardia Nacional used it to shoot shells on the insurected Masaya city.
From the roof of the fort the view on the town, the Masaya lake and the Volcano is superb.
