El Castillo gets its name from the spanish fort that dominates the small town. Build around 1675 the Fortaleza de la Inmaculada Concepción, the goal of this fort was to control the San Juan river that was, at the time, used by pirates to gain access to the Nicaragua lake and attack the city of Granada.
