León Viejo Near the perfectly shaped Momotombo volcano lies the ruins of the old city of León. Built too close to the volcano, Nicaragua's former capital was buried in 1625 under layers of volcanic ash. The ruins of León Viejo are a UNESCO World Heritage site.
