Bassin de la Villette After the Stalingrad Battle Place, the Saint-Martin canal widens and changes name to become the Bassin de la Villette. This large body of water (700m x 70m) was built in 1808. Once one of France's premier ports, people now enjoy strolling along the cobbled quais, the dockside buildings now offering canal boat trips, multiplex cinemas, and waterfront restaurants.
